Biography

Known as John or Jonny, he was educated at Otakou and Karitane Native Schools and Otago Boys High School. He was a member of the Otago Hussars, excelling as a horseman and winning many trophies. He became a first class licensed interpreter. a prominent advocate in the Native Land Court and a leader in Kai Tahu political initiatives. Married firstly Ngapera Wi Parata dau of Wiremu Parata Te Kakakura Waipunahau from Waikanae. They had four children: Thomas, Annie, Pirihana (Bill), and Hemi (Jimmy). By his second wife Hera Kore Parata he had Erueti Te Pura (Ned), Vivian Mokomoko Rawiri (Viv), Katarina Whareaunaruhe (Kuini), Teone Huia Rangiroa (Rangi) 1901-2001, Wiki Tehatapu Maingarongo (Wiki), Tame Rangarahia Mutu (Mutu), Nani Hana Huriwai, Marara Hera Atanui (Atanui).
