Biography

Daniel married Mepere Makuaiterangi (Maku) Te Hapuku, by whom he had six children: Whatomo Thomas, Te Kuini Te Hei Hinepaketia, twins Clarence Tamaiawhitia and Polly, Arihi Mete, and Richard (Dick) Karenema Hapuku. Daniel was a humble man who was a bridge and translator between the two cultures of the Hawkes Bay area, took part in the Te Kereme process, was a member of the Ngai Tahu Census Committee 1929, and active in pressing Otakou land claims issues.
